first week in warehouse hell
24th July 2004, 9:50 am

wow, apologies for leaving it so late. anyway, i have now successfully completed my first week at work. now, working in a warehouse is so frigging dull that i'm gonna give you a rundown of the days, so you can all join in with the boredom.

monday

my dad drove me in the morning, and it took us ages to work out which building was mine. got there, clocked on (those machines are so cool) and then stood around a bit, feeling awqward, while my boss (alf) sorted people out. there were four agency people starting that day, instead of just the one, but because i'd gotten there first i was the only one guaranteed with a permenant job, woohoo!

anyway, firstly i was put on moving some boxes with a guy called bob. i had no idea what i was doing at all, i mean i didn't understand the system of things at all. i was then taken off that and put on label making on the computer, which was much better. i proceeded to do this for the rest of the day, mixed in with making paper labels for some garment samples parked next to the computers.

got home knackered.

tuesday

went to work with the biggest bitch of a headache ever. i made labels all damn day, stood in front of the computer. my headache got worse all day, and then in the afternoon i started feeling sick. ugh, felt so damn gross, but i managed to somehow get to five.

wednesday

the first day of complete boredom - i was put on tagging garments, ie. tagging price tags to the labels and then putting them back in their boxes. the levels of boredom i undertook are undescribable. there was also about 67 million boxes to do. well i lie, there was actually four pallets, but still, nearly. the plus point of this job was that i got to sit down, but my god, it was so dull. i also got RSI in my hand from the damn gun.

thursday

another, yes another, day of tagging. this day was more boring, simply because the thrill of the new job had worn off, and i just on auto pilot - grab bag from box, pull tag out, get price tag on gun, push gun through clothes tag, squeeze trigger, push tag back inside, put bag back in box. imagine doing that for 16 hours, it just numbs the brain.

the day was at least punctuated by talking to jason, who's this really cool guy i met on the first day. he's got a broken pelvis, bad back, previously broken jaw, missing spleen and a missing lung, all from a minibus accident when he was 12. apparently he was asleep for about two and a half months. anyway, he's really nice and stops to talk to me.

darren (A) is also really nice, he's going to uni next year at manchester met, and talks to me when he can. he's been in the job a week more than me, and it apparently gets no less boring.

darren (B) though, is not a cool guy. he's a bloke who tried to pull me the first day he met me (wednesday) with the line, "going home to your boyfriend tonight then?". consequently dave is now my imaginary boyfriend, which i told him about on the phone that night, and i'm thinking about making him 6" tall and built like a tank, just to scare darren off. so yeah, buh. he's now resorted to calling me "gorgeous" and "darling", which is nice for the ego but that's about it. i mean, he's an alright bloke to talk to, i just feel bugger all towards him. hopefully he'll go away soon.

friday

cue more tagging for the morning, god YAWN. we were finished by 12 though, so i then got put on returns in the office, ie. i dealt with the goods being returned back to the factory because there was something wrong with them. it's a much better job, i get a computer, a phone and a comfy seat, and i get to work with chris and D, who are both really nice, but i'm still getting to grips with what i have to do. hopefully i'll be on the same job on monday, so chris can show me more things.

as you can see, not the most fascinating of jobs. it leaves me knackered most nights too, but at least i've earned my first 170. also, ban-rah sent me 100 quid for passing my first year, which is so lovely of her, so my bank balance will start to look a little healthier. i'm gonna hopefully go down to notts one weekend soon and see her.

today is gonna be spent writing whilst i watch the cricket probably. i have to go food shopping at some point too. apart from that anything could happen, i may even venture outside into the sunshine.

side point - victor has been evicted, he he he. i laugh at your ignorance, dave.
