hope of the states
31st October 2004, 11:47 am

i'm up in manchester this weekend, as dave and i went to see hope of the states play at academy 1 last night. i got a train up on friday night about sevenish - you really do find the most retarded people on trains. some woman in a wheelchair wanted to get on, and a porter was there with a wheelchair ramp, but you still get people wanting to push on first, even though the train's empty and not leaving for another five minutes. and then of course they want to walk up the ramp too, rather than waiting for the porter to remove it. dickheads. train was fine anyway, and i got home about nine o'clock. ate another curry, watched the green wing and some of the southpark film and then collapsed into bed.

the house is different from when i was last home - we now have a desk in the back room, and new cushiions and a dvd player downstairs. the house actually looks fantastic, but i still always get the nagging "what's the point now that bernie's not her?" thought whenever i see it. i guess that will never completely go away.

dave arrived here about threeish yesterday afternoon. me and dad had just finished food shopping when he rang and told me he was about to get on the tram, so we wandered around eccles for half an hour before he landed at the tram stop. there was a crazy old man pacing up and down the street shouting, "IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD THEN YOU GO TO HEAVEN, IF YOU DON'T YOU BURN FOR ETERNITY IN HELL! SO THE CHOICE IS SIMPLE, ISN'T IT? HALLOWE'EN IS THE DEVIL'S WORK, AND IF YOU CELEBRATE IT THEN YOU WILL GO TO HELL! REJECT IT AS EVIL AND REMAIN IN THE LIGHT OF THE LORD!" he was very scary, and i gave him a wide berth.

me and dave watched some gymnastics that was on before we headed off - they all kept falling off the asymmetric bars for some reason. we got on the tram about six in the evening, got off at st. peter's square and then walked for about three years down oxford road until we reached the academy. there was queues outside so we decided to get a drink inside manchester uni union instead - picked vodka and red bull to keep me going through the night. the bar's really nice there, but not as big as bar 1. at half seven we went inside, and managed to get a free promotional cd for joining the mailing list - i got no. 2 of 50, so go me!

the first support band - pure cold revolution - were amazing, and really got me in the mood. dave then spotted the lead singer from hope of the states, sam, wandering around the crowd, so we ran off and said hello, and congratulated him for making such a good album. he shook our hands twice, dave was ecstatic. second support band then came on, who weren't as good, and i then bought a chick t-shirt for 15 and a copy of the pure cold revolution cd. then finally, after what seemed like hours of waiting, they came on, and they frickin rocked.

seriously, the gig was absolutely amazing. there was maybe 1000 people there, and the atmosphere was great. the red, the white, the black, the blue was probably the best song, especially with the violin solo in the middle. ooh, i also got a free poster with my t-shirt, which is huge. i really didn't want the night to end, but they finished the second encore at 11ish, and we then trundled down oxford road and back to the tram stop. our tram arrived just as we got there... that's luck for you.

there was a load of eccles townies hanging around the taxi rank when we got into eccles. some drunk guy told me and dave he'd "look after us"... he was quite a fun drunk actually, and left soon as one of his friends offered to give him a lift, so that good. some group further down started to have a huge domestic, ie. "DON'T FUCKIN TELL ME TO FUCKIN SHUT UP YOU BASTARD" *cue smashing of bottles*. we finally got a taxi and got home around 12ish, where we had some food then headed off to bed.

dave left this morning, but i'm stopping home till this evening, so as to make coming home worthwhile. i may have another bath soon, but i'm still undecided. i'm definately hungry though, so that'll be my first port of call.
